Stories vs Reels when you have under 5,000 followers
5 min read · Updated 13 September 2026Brokers with small accounts pour everything into Reels because Reels are what reach new people. Then they wonder why the followers they gain never turn into enquiries.
Reels find people. Stories convert them.
A Reel is shown largely to people who do not follow you, so it is a discovery tool. A Story is shown largely to people who already do, so it is a relationship tool. Judging a Story by its view count is like judging a phone call by how many people overheard it.
What Stories are actually for
- Showing the unglamorous middle of the job: the viewing that went badly, the negotiation, the handover day.
- Asking things. A poll or a question box gives you replies, and a reply is a conversation that has already started.
- Being a person. Followers buy from a broker they feel they know, and nobody feels they know an account that only posts finished listings.
The mistake small accounts make
Posting Stories only when there is something to sell. An audience that sees you exclusively when you want something learns to skip you. The account that shows up on quiet days earns the right to sell on the loud ones.
A workable split
Three Reels a week to be found. Stories most days to be trusted. If you only have capacity for one, and you already have a few hundred engaged followers, Stories will produce more enquiries per hour spent than a fourth Reel.
Highlights are your real profile
A cold buyer who lands on your profile reads the bio and then taps the Highlights. Most brokers leave them as a random pile. Map them as a journey: who you are, the area, current listings, deals done, and how to start a conversation.
Five Highlights arranged in that order do more work than a month of extra Reels, and they take an afternoon.
